Barely 7 days left for New Year’s eve. And you still need to lose 5 kilos to reach your goal weight. How on earth can you possibly shed that many kilos in such little time? The answer ― The GM diet.
The GM diet was first developed by General Motors (thus the name) in conjunction with the FDA to help improve efficiency in their employees in 1985. The diet plan was a huge success, with many workers reportedly losing about 5 to 7 kgs in one .
The GM diet plan for weight loss not only helps people to lose a large amount of weight in a matter of 7 days, but also helps to detoxify and cleanse the body in the process. Unlike other diet plans, there are no restrictions on the quantity of foods that can be eaten, though there may be restrictions on what type of food is to be eaten.
The GM diet plan
This diet plan involves eating fruits and vegetables in abundance. An important tip is to restrict alcohol intake for a few days before, during and after the diet plan as alcohol will raise uric acid levels which will cause water retention and block the natural detoxifying process.
GM diet Day1
The first day involves consuming only fruits in any quantity you may wish. Fruits like watermelon, oranges,apples, strawberries, melons are encouraged. Fruits like bananas, grapes, mangoes and litchis are to be avoided. The fruits contain good amounts of water and fibre that keep you full for longer time periods and also helps with supplying the essential nutrients the body needs.

Day 2 of the GM diet plan is only about vegetables. They can be eaten raw or cooked, but only vegetables are to be consumed all day. Begin the day by a potato along with a teaspoon of butter. The carbohydrates will keep you running for the entire day. Make sure to not eat more than one potato. Use oregano or any other herbs for taste.
GM diet Day 3
Day 3 includes both fruits and vegetables. Avoid potatoes as the carbohydrates from the fruits will be sufficient enough. Remember to not succumb to your cravings and resist the urge to achieve the ultimate goal.
GM diet Day 4
The 4th day is only about eating bananas and milk. One can consume up to 6 bananas in the entire day and drink 4 glasses of milk. Though bananas lead to weight gain, here they would be merely replenishing the potassium and sodium content. A light soup of onions, garlic, capsicum and tomatoes can be prepared for any one particular meal to stimulate the taste buds.
GM diet Day 5
Regular foods are included on Day 5 of the GM diet plan. Eat soup prepared with tomatoes, cheese, paneer, sprouts, and soya. Upto 6 tomatoes can be eaten.
GM diet Day 6
Excluding tomatoes, all other vegetables from Day 5 can be used for making soup along with sprouts. Drink plenty of water.
GM diet Day 7
By this time, you will have already begun seeing the changes. On the last and final day of the GM diet, have fresh fruit juice, a cup of brown rice or one small chapati and vegetables of your choice. Drink good amount of water the whole day to prevent dehydration.
By the sound of it, this 7 day diet cleanse regimen seems the best fit for Indians especially vegetarians. One of the disadvantages of GM diet is that though this diet will help you lose weight quickly, this is not a long term solution. It needs to be followed up with a regular 1200 calorie diet plan for maintainance, else the lost weight will bounce back soon. Consult your family physician before you begin the GM diet plan.
