There are NO shortcuts to success. Even when it comes to gymming. Especially when it comes to weight training. And yes, steroids do have side effects!

The recent video of actor Aamir Khan has been going viral for his extreme transformation technique while training for his upcoming movie Dangal. Many people sweating it out and bulking up in the gym in the hopes of emulating their superstar’s body have been taking steroids to gain weight fast.

While such aspirations is uber cool, using steroids to achieve that look is absolutely not. Here’s what no one is telling you about using steroids to gain weight fast.

What are steroids?

Steroids are natural hormone and not a nutritional supplement. There are two types of steroids-

  1. Corticosteroids-used as a medicines in certain disease conditions like asthma or skin diseases or arthritis
  2. Anabolic steroids called hype, juice, pump are prescription drugs that help increase protein absorption from the diet by altering protein metabolism.

What steroids are used in gaining muscle?

Anabolic steroids are used to add bulk to your muscles. Anabolic means body building tissue. They are not steroid medications which are used to treat diseased conditions(e.g. Asthma or skin diseases) anabolic steroids help muscle tissue and increase body mass by ‘acting’ like body’s natural male hormone testosterone.

How are corticosteroids different from anabolic steroids?

Steroids are available as tablets, soluble tablets, and solutions, creams, ointments, inhalers, and injections.

Do not get confused between the two. Anabolic steroids are drugs and are banned due to side effects. On the other hand corticosteroids are used to mitigate overactive immune systems and to decrease inflammation in conditions like arthritis.

Are steroids produced naturally by the body?

Yes. Natural testosterone ( a type of steroid hormone) is found in both men and women, though levels in women are found to be much lower than males. They help maintain muscle mass within limits.

What are the side effects of using  anabolic steroids?

Steroids have a lot of side effects. Steroids shut down your natural testosterone and replace it with synthetic one. The effects of using anabolic steroids are extremely powerful affecting every aspect of the body.

Many side effects are common to both men and women, some harmful effects are seen in specific age groups and gender.

  • Gynecomastia-Enlargement of breast(irreversible)
  • Erections are painful

  • Low sperm count
  • Infertility and impotency
  • Increased prostate cancer risk

 steroid Side effects in women

Steroid Side effects in both men and women

  • Increased rate of muscle strain
  • Impaired liver function
  • Mood swings, delusions, low appetite, suicidal and homicidal tendencies

Teenagers who are on anabolic steroids can show decrease in height growth due to arrested bone development. Teenage girls may show long term masculinization.

So, are steroids bad for you?

Yes, from the side effects given above, it can be concluded that steroids are indeed bad for your health, as they have a lot of side effects. Anabolic steroids and stimulants are prohibited classes of substance in sports. These are not magical pills that help you to peak your endurance.

Achieving a super body is well within your reach, only when you are able to assess your body, understand it better, put in hard work with muscle strengthening training and a customized diet plan.

Taking steroids is as risky as playing a round of Russian roulette. Five people could take them without any problems, but the sixth one could just end up dead.
