Blame your hormones for being unpredictable, but pregnancy can throw many unusual symptoms very early on that can be easily missed. Before you go all gaga over social media about having the ‘signs of three’ after just seeing signs of pregnancy,  get this fact right– the only way to confirm if you’re pregnant or not is to take a pregnancy test. Even if you may have had practised safe sex with your partner, you may still need to pee on that stick.

Here are 5 other ‘early’ signs of pregnancy you might have missed…

  • Feeling exhausted all the timeexhausted

Why does this happen?

The hormone progesterone is to be blamed here. As pregnant women produce more blood for nutrition and oxygen for the baby and herself, a lot of glucose is used up, lowering the sugar levels, making you feel tired all the time.

What kind of pregnancy symptoms will I have?

You will feel tired all the time, even if you’ve just woken up from a deep night’s sleep. A woman can feel drained within just one week of her pregnancy.

It could also be depression, anxiety, type 2 diabetes, certain medications for allergy or cold that may make you drowsy. Check with your doctor to investigate for each cause.

  • Nausea and vomitingvomiting

Why does this happen?

Known as ‘morning sickness’ or in medical terms ‘hyperemesis gravidarum’, not many women complain of it. The exact cause isn’t known, but doctors believe it is due to the hormones.

What kind of pregnancy symptoms will I have?

Pain and grumbling with a churning sensation in the stomach make you vomit.

It could also be  a viral infection,food poisoning, vertigo , cervical spondylosis, birth control pills.

  • Missed / Late periodsperiods-delay

Why does this happen?:The first thing that makes a woman buy a pregnancy kit is a missed period. But not all missed periods mean a positive pregnancy. A woman having a monthly cycle is a sign of no pregnancy as the uterus is trying to prepare for one, to allow fertilization of the sperm for each month. When no eggs are fertilized by the sperm, the uterus sheds its lining along with blood and tries again next month. If you are pregnant, the lining of the uterus is busy preparing for the baby to grow.

What kind of pregnancy symptoms will I have?

You can get all your usual PMS symptoms, but still no period. You may want to check your monthly calendar now.

It could also be PCOD, hypothyroidism, stress, physical activity

  • Breasts feel soresore-breast

Why does this happen?

Hormonal changes occur rapidly the moment fertilization takes place, as early as within the first week itself. So look out for any changes in the breast and nipples.

What kind of pregnancy symptoms will I have?

Breasts feel very tender and sore, the area around the nipple called areola becomes more purple

It could also be the exact opposite of being pregnant…. PMS! Even menopause, coffee drinking, mastitis (inflammation and swelling of breast) or pulling a muscle while exercising or pulling weights, or an improper sized bra.

  • Cravings and aversionscravings

Why does this happen?:

No scientific reason yet,but it is believed that the over flooding of hormones leads to sharp taste sensations.

What kind of  pregnancy symptoms will I have?

Sudden intense desire to eat a particular food item without any particular reason. Suddenly the food you’ve always liked may make you repugnant.

It could also be a natural craving…all cravings don’t mean pregnant right?  If it were ,you would be pregnant each time you crave for that slice of pizza.

Other signs like mood swings , frequent urination,constipation, headaches are also early signs of pregnancy.
