Normal urine creatinine varies by collection method. For a 24‑hour urine, typical creatinine excretion is about 14–26 mg/kg/day in men and 11–20 mg/kg/day in women (roughly 700–1,800 mg/day depending on body size). Spot urine creatinine values vary widely; clinicians usually use urine creatinine or creatinine‑adjusted ratios to interpret results rather than a single universal cutoff.

A urine creatinine value under 20 (depending on units) is generally considered low. This can reflect very dilute urine, reduced muscle mass, an incomplete 24‑hour collection, or lab/measurement issues. It should be interpreted with urine volume, serum creatinine, and clinical context. Repeat testing or a proper 24‑hour collection and discussion with your clinician are recommended to determine cause and next steps.

High urine creatinine usually means concentrated urine—often from dehydration—or reflects greater muscle mass, recent strenuous exercise, or high meat intake. It can also result from collection or lab errors. Rarely, markedly elevated urinary creatinine with other abnormal tests may signal excessive muscle breakdown. To raise urine creatinine, build muscle with resistance exercise and maintain normal protein intake; dietary creatine/meat or supervised creatine supplements increase creatinine production. Avoid excessive fluid intake before collection (which dilutes urine) and ensure correct 24-hour urine collection technique.
