Question 1

What does a 3T MRI mean?

Accepted Answer

A 3T MRI denotes a scanner with a 3-tesla magnetic field strength (twice the strength of standard 1.5T systems). Higher field yields stronger signal-to-noise ratio, finer image resolution and shorter scan times, useful for detailed neuro, musculoskeletal and vascular imaging. It can increase artifacts and tissue heating risk, so safety screening and implant compatibility must be carefully reviewed.

Question 2

Which is better, 3T or 1.5 T MRI?

Accepted Answer

3T MRI provides higher signal to noise ratio, finer resolution, and faster scans, making it preferable for detailed brain, spine, vascular imaging and advanced techniques. 1.5T is sufficient for most routine exams, produces fewer susceptibility artifacts, and has broader implant compatibility and lower specific absorption. Choice depends on clinical needs, patient factors (implants, comfort), and availability.

Question 3

Is 3T MRI more expensive?

Accepted Answer

Yes. 3T MRI scanners are generally more expensive than lower-field systems. Higher purchase cost, stronger superconducting magnets, greater installation/shielding, increased power and maintenance, and specialized software or staff raise operating expenses. Providers often charge higher fees to recoup investment, though improved image quality and potentially faster protocols can affect value and final pricing per exam.

Question 4

How strong is a 3T MRI?

Accepted Answer

A 3T MRI uses a 3-tesla magnetic field—about 60,000 times Earth’s field—and is classified as a high-field clinical scanner. Compared with 1.5T it provides higher signal-to-noise ratio, improved resolution and faster scans, useful for brain, spine and vascular imaging. It increases sensitivity to artifacts and has stricter implant and safety considerations, but is widely used in routine and advanced clinical exams.

Question 5

How to prepare for 3T MRI?

Accepted Answer

Before a 3T MRI: tell staff about implants, pacemakers, metal clips, tattoos, piercings, pregnancy or kidney disease. Remove all metal, jewelry, watches and cards; wear metal‑free clothing. Bring prior scans and a medication list. If contrast is planned you may need a recent kidney‑function test; fast only if instructed. Expect loud noise — use provided ear protection; discuss claustrophobia or sedation options ahead.

Question 6

How long is a 3T MRI scan?

Accepted Answer

A 3T MRI typically takes about 20–60 minutes. Simple targeted scans may be completed in 15–30 minutes, while multi-sequence or contrast-enhanced studies can extend to 60–90 minutes. Total time depends on the body part imaged, number of sequences, need for contrast, and patient movement or preparation. Scheduling often includes extra time for positioning and safety checks.

Question 7

What is the MRA of renal arteries?

Accepted Answer

MRA of the renal arteries is a non‑invasive MRI technique that visualizes renal artery anatomy and blood flow to detect stenosis, occlusion, aneurysm, or vascular anomalies. It may use contrast‑enhanced or noncontrast sequences and is used for evaluating secondary hypertension, transplant planning, or suspected renal artery disease. Advantages include no ionizing radiation; limitations include lower spatial resolution than CT and gadolinium risks in severe renal impairment.

Question 8

What are bilateral renal arteries?

Accepted Answer

Bilateral renal arteries are the pair of blood vessels that branch off the abdominal aorta to supply each kidney with oxygenated blood. Each renal artery enters its kidney at the hilum, dividing into segmental and smaller branches to perfuse renal tissue. Variations (accessory arteries) are common. Their patency is vital for kidney function and blood pressure regulation; stenosis can cause hypertension and renal impairment.

Question 9

Why would a doctor order an MRA?

Accepted Answer

Doctors order an MRA to noninvasively visualize blood vessels and assess blood flow. Indications include evaluating suspected stroke, aneurysm, arteriovenous malformation, carotid or renal artery stenosis, peripheral arterial disease, vascular inflammation, or planning/monitoring stents and grafts. It helps locate blockages, narrowing, malformations, or bleeding risk without catheter angiography, guiding diagnosis, treatment decisions and surgical planning.

Question 10

What is the treatment for bilateral renal artery stenosis?

Accepted Answer

Treatment of bilateral renal artery stenosis focuses on blood-pressure control, cardiovascular risk reduction, and revascularization when indicated. Percutaneous transluminal renal angioplasty with stenting is the preferred revascularization for progressive renal dysfunction, refractory hypertension, or recurrent flash pulmonary edema; surgical bypass is rare. ACE inhibitors or ARBs can worsen kidney function and are used cautiously with close creatinine/potassium monitoring. Antiplatelet therapy and statins are advised.
