MRI Scan Whole Spine with AS Protocol

A whole-spine MRI images the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine in multiple planes and sequences—typically sagittal T1 and T2, STIR or fat‑suppressed sequences, and targeted axial slices. It evaluates vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerve roots, spinal canal, and surrounding soft tissues; contrast (gadolinium) may be used for infection, inflammation or tumor assessment. Scan time is usually 30–45 minutes.

A whole-spine MRI (cervical, thoracic and lumbar) typically takes about 30 to 90 minutes, most commonly 45 to 60 minutes. Duration depends on the scanner type and imaging sequences used; adding intravenous contrast can add 10–30 minutes. Patient positioning, motion, and technician protocols or repeats may extend total appointment time, so plan for roughly an hour and allow extra time.

The special protocol for MRI includes pre-scan safety screening for implants, pacemakers, metal fragments, and pregnancy; removing all metal, jewelry, watches, and certain clothing; assessing kidney function before gadolinium contrast; confirming device MRI-conditional status if present; using ear protection and an emergency call button; instructing patients to lie still; and offering sedation or open MRI for claustrophobic patients. Technologists monitor throughout.

Before a full-spine MRI, remove all metal, jewelry, watches and makeup; wear loose, metal-free clothing or the facility gown. Bring ID, referral and a list of implants/medical devices; tell staff if pregnant, breastfeeding, or claustrophobic. Blood tests may be needed if gadolinium contrast is planned, and you might need to fast or pause certain meds—follow facility instructions. Arrive early to complete safety forms.

A full‑spine MRI cost varies widely by country and setting. In the United States, self‑pay prices commonly range from roughly $700 to $3,000 or more (insured out‑of‑pocket often $0–$500). In the United Kingdom the scan is free on the NHS; private scans typically cost about £300–£1,200. In India private full‑spine MRIs often range roughly ₹2,500–₹12,000. Final price depends on location, use of contrast, and facility.

A full spine MRI is generally safe and involves no ionizing radiation. Risks include complications with metallic implants or certain devices (movement or malfunction), claustrophobia, loud noise, and rare allergic reactions or gadolinium-related issues—especially in people with severe kidney disease. Pregnant patients should inform staff; MRI and contrast are used only when necessary. Always disclose implants, pregnancy, and kidney problems before scanning.
