X Ray Soft Tissue Neck AP & LAT view.

AP (anteroposterior) and Lat (lateral) are X‑ray projections. AP means the beam enters the front (anterior) and exits the back (posterior), often used when patients can’t stand and can slightly magnify heart/mediastinal structures. Lateral is a side‑to‑side view, perpendicular to AP, showing depth and front‑to‑back relationships to better localize abnormalities in lungs, spine, or joints.

Position the patient upright (standing or seated) for a lateral soft‑tissue neck radiograph, shoulders relaxed and neck slightly extended with mouth closed. Center the X‑ray beam at the C3–C5 level (around the thyroid cartilage), collimate from the skull base to the thoracic inlet. Image is usually taken on full inspiration; AP/PA or inspiratory views may be added for specific indications.

A neck X‑ray mainly images bone but can show some soft‑tissue features indirectly — prevertebral swelling, airway narrowing, soft‑tissue calcifications, gas, or large masses. It cannot reliably display ligaments, discs, small infections, or subtle soft‑tissue injuries. If soft‑tissue pathology is suspected or the X‑ray is inconclusive, CT or MRI provide far better visualization and diagnostic accuracy.

A soft-tissue neck X‑ray typically costs: in the UK it’s usually free through the public health service for eligible patients; in India about ₹200–₹1,200 at private clinics; in the USA commonly $50–$500 cash, though hospital bills can exceed $1,000 before insurance. A lateral (lat) X-ray view is a side-on radiographic image taken at 90° to the frontal (AP/PA) projection. It shows structures in profile, revealing depth, posterior–anterior relationships, vertebral alignment, pleural fluid or air levels, and helps localize fractures or lesions. Lateral views complement frontal films to improve diagnostic accuracy and surgical planning, especially for chest, spine, skull, and extremities.
