X Ray Scanogram Bilateral Lower Limb AP View

An X-ray scanogram of both lower limbs is a specialized radiographic technique that produces full-length, weight-bearing images of the hips, knees and ankles to accurately measure limb lengths and alignment. It's used to detect leg‑length discrepancy, angular deformities and for preoperative planning. The scanogram uses low‑dose X-rays, is noninvasive, quick (standing or supine), and gives precise measurements for clinical decisions.

AP (anteroposterior) X‑ray view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the body onto an image receptor behind the patient. It’s commonly used for bedridden, trauma, or portable exams. AP views produce greater magnification and can make the heart and mediastinum appear larger than in standard PA views, so interpretation is adjusted accordingly.

A scanogram X-ray (orthoroentgenogram) is used to obtain precise limb‑length measurements, typically of the lower limbs, to detect leg‑length discrepancies and guide orthopedic treatment. It produces calibrated images of the hip, knee and ankle on one radiograph for accurate measurement, aiding growth assessment, preoperative planning for corrective surgery, and monitoring outcomes after treatment.

"AP leg" is the anteroposterior X‑ray view of the leg. The beam passes front-to-back to image the tibia and fibula, often including the knee and ankle. It helps detect fractures, evaluate bone alignment and joint spaces, and guide treatment or follow-up. Accurate positioning and an additional lateral view improve diagnostic reliability.

Cost varies by country and provider. In India a scanogram usually costs about ₹300–₹1,500 privately. In the UK it’s free on the NHS with a referral; private clinics charge roughly £60–£200. In the US private/out‑of‑pocket prices typically run about $100–$500, though insurance often covers it with a doctor’s referral. Check with your local facility and insurer.

On the day, wear loose clothing or a gown and remove jewelry, belts, shoes and other metal objects. Bring your referral and any previous imaging. Inform the radiographer if you are pregnant or have implants. You usually don’t need to fast. You’ll be positioned for images (standing or supine) and must keep still during exposures. Arrive early and follow staff instructions.
