X Ray Right Shoulder with Whole Arm and Lateral View

The three standard shoulder X‑ray views are: 1) Anteroposterior (AP)/Grashey view — true AP to evaluate the glenohumeral joint and fractures; 2) Scapular Y (lateral) view — shows acromion, coracoid and humeral head position, useful for dislocation; 3) Axillary view — provides an axial look at joint congruity and small fractures. These three complement each other for comprehensive assessment.

A lateral shoulder X‑ray is a side-view radiograph of the shoulder (scapular Y‑view) that shows the relation of the humeral head to the glenoid, acromion and clavicle. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, joint space changes, bone lesions and calcific deposits. Performed with specific arm positioning, it’s a quick, low‑radiation test commonly used after trauma or for persistent shoulder pain and limited movement.

Position the patient in an anterior oblique (about 45–60°) so the scapula is lateral to the cassette. Place the image receptor at the involved shoulder; have the patient rest the arm across the chest or hold it neutral to displace the humerus. Centre the central ray perpendicular to the scapulohumeral joint, collimate to include scapula and proximal humerus, remove jewelry, and instruct the patient to hold breath during exposure.

Routine shoulder X-rays include an anteroposterior (AP) view—often with internal and external rotation—plus an axillary view and a scapular “Y” (lateral) view. These assess fractures, dislocations, joint space and scapular alignment. Special views (Grashey/glenoid, outlet) or advanced imaging (CT/MRI) are used when films are inconclusive or for detailed assessment.

Costs vary widely. In India a shoulder X‑ray typically costs about ₹150–₹800 at diagnostic centers. In the United States expect roughly $50–$400 for standard radiographs (more in hospitals/ER). In the UK X‑rays are free on the NHS for eligible patients; private clinics charge roughly £30–£150. Prices depend on setting, number of views, and location.
