A lateral hip X-ray is a side-view radiograph of the hip that shows the femoral head, neck, acetabulum and surrounding soft tissues from the lateral aspect. It complements an anteroposterior view to evaluate fractures, dislocations, osteoarthritis, prosthesis alignment and focal bone lesions. The exam is quick, uses low ionising radiation, and may be performed lying or standing.

The lateral view of the hip bone shows the external surface of the os coxae that faces the femur and forms the hip joint. It highlights the acetabulum (the socket for the femoral head) and contributions of the ilium, ischium, and pubis, revealing landmarks such as the iliac crest, greater sciatic notch, ischial tuberosity, and the obturator foramen.

The lateral hip is the outer side of the hip near the greater trochanter, the bony prominence of the femur. It includes muscles (gluteus medius/minimus), tendons and bursae. Pain here commonly reflects trochanteric bursitis or tendinopathy, causing tenderness, aching and pain with walking, climbing stairs or lying on the affected side. Treatment often involves rest, physiotherapy and pain relief.

A 4‑view hip X‑ray is a set of four radiographs taken from different angles to assess the hip joint and surrounding bones. It typically includes AP pelvis/hip views plus lateral views (frog‑leg and/or cross‑table) and an oblique view, offering comprehensive visualization to detect fractures, dislocation, arthritis, infection, or tumors. It’s commonly used after trauma or for chronic hip pain.

A lateral view is an X-ray taken from the side, with the X-ray beam passing perpendicular to a front-to-back (AP/PA) view. It displays structures in profile, reducing overlap seen on frontal films and showing anterior-posterior relationships. Lateral views help localize lesions, assess alignment (spine), and visualize spaces obscured on frontal images (chest, skull, joints). Patient stands or lies with the side against the detector.

A hip X‑ray itself is not painful — it’s a quick, noninvasive imaging test. Any discomfort usually comes from moving or holding positions because of an existing hip injury, arthritis, or stiffness. Radiographers can help with careful positioning, supports, or pain-relief advice. If pain is severe, tell staff so they can minimize movement or consider alternative imaging.
