AP (anteroposterior) view is an X‑ray projection where the beam passes front-to-back—commonly used for supine or portable exams; it can magnify cardiac and mediastinal silhouettes. The lateral view is taken from the side, providing depth information to localize lesions, assess vertebral alignment, and visualize structures obscured on AP. Together they show orthogonal planes to improve diagnostic accuracy.

An AP (anteroposterior) finger view is an X‑ray taken with the finger flat on the detector, palm down and fully extended, so the beam passes from front to back. The central ray targets the proximal interphalangeal joint to include the distal phalanx through the metacarpal head. It gives a straight‑on image for evaluating fractures, joint alignment, and bony detail.

Position the finger in a true lateral: seat the patient, rest the hand on the detector with the affected finger rotated so its lateral surface contacts the image receptor and the fingernail is perpendicular to the receptor. Flex remaining fingers out of the field. Center the central ray perpendicular to the PIP joint, include the entire digit to the distal metacarpal, and support with a sponge.

Standard finger X‑ray typically includes three views — PA (or AP), lateral, and oblique — to evaluate fractures, joint alignment, and foreign bodies. Additional views, special projections, or comparison films may be requested for complex injuries, subtle fractures, dislocations, or preoperative planning. The thumb is usually imaged separately with dedicated projections. Your clinician will determine which and how many views are needed.

AP (anteroposterior) is a single frontal projection and lateral is a single side projection; together they are two separate radiographic views. Performing both AP and lateral gives orthogonal perspectives—front-to-back and side—improving lesion localization and assessment of anatomy and pathology. These two views are commonly used for chest, skull, spine and extremity imaging to increase diagnostic accuracy.

A lateral X-ray is a side-view projection, not inherently left or right. It becomes left or right lateral depending on which side of the patient is placed against the detector and marked by the radiographer. Always check the labeled marker on the image; without a marker, you cannot reliably determine whether the lateral view is of the left or right side.
