A finger X-ray shows the bones, joints and growth plates, allowing detection of fractures, dislocations, degenerative or inflammatory arthritis, bone infections and tumors. It can reveal foreign bodies, bone alignment, and healing progress after injury or surgery. Soft-tissue swelling or calcifications may be visible. If findings are complex or unclear, additional views or advanced imaging (CT or MRI) may be recommended.

For a lateral finger X‑ray the patient sits beside the detector with the hand resting on the cassette. Place the affected finger in a true lateral—its lateral surface against the image receptor and the finger plane perpendicular to the detector. Flex adjacent fingers out of the field or tape them. Center the X‑ray beam at the PIP joint, include distal phalanx to distal metacarpal, and immobilize to avoid motion.

Get a finger X‑ray when you’ve had a direct injury and have severe pain, obvious deformity, swelling, bruising, inability to bend or use the finger, numbness, or an open wound. Also consider imaging if pain and limited motion persist beyond a few days or if bone injury is suspected after trauma. Early X‑ray helps detect fractures and guides treatment.

Finger X-rays are very quick. The actual exposure is seconds, but the whole visit typically takes about 5–15 minutes for positioning and taking two or three views. If the department is busy, additional imaging, or you need splinting/casting, it can take up to 30 minutes. Expect brief instructions and minimal preparation; no special prep is usually required.

An X-ray can suggest finger infection by showing bone changes (osteomyelitis), soft-tissue swelling, or gas in tissues, but early infections often aren’t visible. Bone destruction usually appears after several days to a week. If infection is suspected despite a normal X-ray, clinicians often use ultrasound, MRI, blood tests (CRP, white cell count) and clinical exam to confirm and guide treatment.

X-rays can detect many conditions: bone fractures, joint damage, some infections, chest problems such as pneumonia, large lung masses, and heart enlargement, and certain bowel or urinary stones. They have limited sensitivity for soft tissues and early-stage disease, so CT, MRI, ultrasound, or lab tests are often needed for definitive diagnosis. X-rays use ionizing radiation and are ordered when clinically appropriate.
