Standard femur X-ray views are anteroposterior (AP) and lateral projections of the entire bone, including hip and knee. Usually two overlapping AP and lateral exposures (proximal and distal) are taken to include both joints and assess fractures, alignment, and implants. For a true AP the limb is slightly internally rotated; the lateral view is obtained with the femur positioned perpendicular to the detector.

Lateral (lat) view in X‑ray is a side‑on projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other, producing a profile image. It helps localize lesions, assess spinal alignment, detect fractures, and visualize soft tissues and lungs that may be obscured on frontal (AP/PA) views. Proper patient positioning and minimal rotation are essential for diagnostic accuracy.

Align the mid‑femur to the image receptor, flex the knee about 45° for distal femur visualization, and include the hip or knee as required. Collimate to the femur, apply lead shielding and a side marker, immobilize, and ask the patient to remain still during exposure.
