AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard X‑ray projections. AP means the X‑ray beam passes from the anterior (front) to the posterior (back) of the body onto the detector; it’s often used when patients can’t stand and can slightly magnify structures. Lateral views are taken from the side, with the beam traveling laterally to medially, providing depth information and separating overlapping anatomy for clearer localization.

AP (anteroposterior) view means the X‑ray beam passes from the front (anterior) to the back (posterior) of the patient. The detector is behind the patient and the source in front. It’s used for bedside, supine, or nonambulatory patients. AP films can cause magnification and make the heart or mediastinum appear larger than on PA views, so interpretation adjusts for this.

A PA (posteroanterior) chest X-ray is taken with the patient facing the detector so X‑rays pass from back to front, reducing heart magnification and improving lung detail. A lateral X‑ray is a side view with the beam passing through one side of the chest to the other; it complements the PA film by localizing lesions, assessing posterior lung fields and pleural fluid, and showing depth.

A true AP forearm radiograph is taken with the elbow extended and the forearm fully supinated so the radius and ulna lie parallel; it includes wrist and elbow. A true lateral is obtained with the elbow flexed 90° and the forearm in neutral (thumb up), aligning shoulder and forearm so the radius and ulna are superimposed; both views must include wrist and elbow for accurate assessment.
