X Ray oblique View

A lateral view is an X‑ray taken from the side (90° to the front), producing a profile image that separates anterior and posterior structures and helps assess depth. An oblique view is taken at an intermediate angle between frontal and lateral projections to shift overlapping anatomy, improving visualization of joints, spinal facets, ribs, or fractures that may be hidden on AP or lateral images.

Oblique viewing is inspecting a structure from an angled (non‑orthogonal) line of sight rather than straight on. In clinical eye exams, the patient looks away so peripheral or hidden lesions become visible. In imaging, oblique views are X‑rays or photos taken at an angle to reveal anatomy obscured on frontal or lateral projections. This technique improves detection of subtle pathology.

An oblique foot X‑ray provides a diagonal view highlighting bones of the midfoot and forefoot—metatarsals, phalanges, cuneiforms, cuboid and navicular—plus joint spaces. It improves detection of fractures, dislocations, bone fragments and alignment abnormalities that may be obscured on straight AP or lateral views. It can also show degenerative changes and larger soft‑tissue abnormalities, though soft tissues are poorly defined.

The oblique wrist X‑ray provides an angled view that better visualizes carpal bones, distal radius and ulna, and joint spaces. It helps detect fractures (especially scaphoid and radial styloid), dislocations, subluxations, and subtle bony injuries that may be obscured on straight PA or lateral views. It also aids assessment of alignment, arthritis, and post‑reduction positioning.

Vertical solar rays strike Earth's surface at or near ninety degrees, concentrating energy on a small area, producing higher intensity, shorter shadows, and stronger heating. Oblique rays hit at an angle, spreading the same energy over a larger area and passing through more atmosphere, so intensity and heating are reduced and shadows are longer. This difference drives temperature variation with latitude and season.

Horizontal describes something parallel to the horizon or transverse plane (lying straight across). Oblique describes a slanted or diagonal orientation between horizontal and vertical. In medicine, a horizontal (transverse) plane divides the body into top and bottom and transverse fractures run straight across; an oblique plane or fracture is angled, cutting or breaking the structure diagonally relative to horizontal.
