The lateral view of the nasal bone is a plain radiographic projection taken with the head in true lateral position so the nasal bones are superimposed. It shows the profile, contour and cortical margins of the nasal bones and adjacent soft tissues, allowing detection of fractures, displacement, and step-offs. It helps assess nasal bone alignment and bony injury in facial trauma.

The primary X-ray for a suspected nasal fracture is a lateral nasal bones view, which best shows displacement and step-off. A Waters (occipitomental/PA) view is often added to evaluate contour and septal deviation. For complex, comminuted injuries or suspected associated facial fractures, CT of the facial bones is preferred for detailed assessment and surgical planning.

Costs vary by country and setting. In India a lateral nasopharynx X‑ray typically costs about ₹200–₹1,500 depending on the centre. In the UK it is free under the NHS but private clinics charge roughly £30–£150. In the US billed charges often range $50–$300, with out‑of‑pocket costs depending on insurance; prices vary by facility and region.

Plain nasal X‑rays can identify obvious nasal bone fractures and radio‑opaque foreign bodies and give a basic assessment of facial bones. However, they have limited sensitivity for septal or complex fractures, soft‑tissue injury, and sinus disease; CT or endoscopy are preferred for detailed evaluation and surgical planning. Routine use for uncomplicated sinusitis is not recommended; radiation exposure—though low—should be considered, especially in children.

Lateral to the nasal cavity are the paired maxillary sinuses and the lateral nasal wall structures (including the inferior and middle conchae). Externally, the cheeks—underlain by the zygomatic bones and soft tissues—and the lateral nasal cartilages lie lateral to the nose. The infraorbital region (infraorbital foramen and nerve) on the maxilla is also lateral, supplying sensation to the cheek.

The nasal bones are a pair of small rectangular bones at the upper-middle part of the face that form the bridge of the nose.
