Flexion lumbar spine x‑ray is taken with the patient standing (or seated) and bending forward at the waist to maximally flex the lumbar spine. The knees may be straight or slightly flexed while arms cross the chest or reach toward the knees. A lateral radiograph is obtained in this flexed position to assess vertebral alignment, disc space changes and dynamic instability (e.g., spondylolisthesis).

LS spine flexion and extension views are dynamic X‑ray images of the lumbosacral spine taken while a patient bends forward (flexion) and backward (extension). They assess spinal stability and alignment, revealing abnormal vertebral motion, spondylolisthesis, or ligamentous injury not seen on static films. These views help guide diagnosis and management of back pain, trauma, and suspected instability.

To check lumbar flexion, have the patient stand with knees straight and feet hip-width apart. Ask them to bend forward slowly from the hips, keeping knees straight. Observe movement and quantify with an inclinometer (one at S2, one at T12–L1) or use the modified Schober (mark S2, 5 cm below and 10 cm above; measure increase). Normal lumbar flexion ≈40–60°.

A lumbosacral spine 4-view is an X-ray series of the lower back including AP (anteroposterior), lateral and two oblique projections. It visualizes the lumbar vertebrae, lumbosacral junction, sacrum and facet joints to assess alignment, disc space narrowing, fractures, spondylolisthesis and degenerative changes. It’s commonly ordered for low back pain, trauma or suspected structural abnormalities.

Lumbar spine flexion is the forward bending of the lower back that reduces its natural inward curve (lordosis). Vertebral bodies tilt anteriorly, intervertebral discs compress in front and posterior ligaments and muscles stretch. It contributes to overall trunk flexion along with hip movement; pure lumbar flexion is typically about 40–60 degrees. Painful or excessive flexion may signal disc or soft‑tissue problems.
