For a lateral finger X-ray, position the affected finger in a true lateral with the palmar surface perpendicular to the image receptor and the lateral aspect against the detector. Flex or tape the remaining fingers out of the field. Align joints and include fingertip through the metacarpal head, centering the beam at the PIP joint. Immobilize to prevent rotation and motion blur.

In anatomical terms, “lateral to the index finger” means on its thumb (radial) side. With the palms facing forward, lateral indicates away from the body’s midline, so the thumb lies lateral to the index finger. Conversely, the middle finger is medial to the index finger. This language is used to describe locations for exams, injuries, or procedures.

Left lateral position (left lateral decubitus) means the patient lies on their left side with the left side closest to the image receptor; the X‑ray beam is directed from right to left. It’s used in chest and abdominal imaging to detect pleural effusion, pneumothorax, air–fluid levels, and small-bowel obstruction. An "L" marker indicates the left side.

A finger X‑ray typically requires at least two views—PA (or AP) and lateral—to assess alignment and detect fractures. When trauma or a subtle injury is suspected, a third (oblique) view is commonly added for better visualization. Additional views or repeat imaging may be taken if joints are unstable, complex fractures are suspected, or clinical findings don’t match radiographs.

A lateral X‑ray view is a side-to-side radiographic projection where the X‑ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other, producing an image at right angles to frontal (AP/PA) views. It separates overlapping structures to show depth, alignment, fractures, joint spaces, and fluid levels. Positioning (standing, sitting, or supine) depends on the body part and clinical question.

The lateral position is lying on one’s side with the head supported and the top leg slightly flexed forward. Clinically, it’s used to improve airway patency, reduce aspiration risk, relieve pressure on the back and heels, and facilitate certain surgeries or exams. Pillows between knees and under the upper arm maintain spinal alignment and patient comfort.
