The oblique view of the hand is an X‑ray projection obtained with the palm down and the hand rotated about 45° laterally (fingers slightly spread). The central ray is directed perpendicular to the third metacarpal. This projection visualizes metacarpals, MCP and interphalangeal joints, and cortical alignment, improving detection of fractures, dislocations, joint‑space narrowing, and small foreign bodies compared to AP or lateral views.

Position the patient (standing, sitting, or supine) and rotate the body 45° toward the receptor to create an oblique projection of the area of interest. Align and center the X‑ray beam to the targeted anatomy and perpendicular to the image receptor. Instruct the patient to hold still (or hold breath when required), use proper collimation, add side markers, and apply gonadal shielding as indicated.
