The lateral forearm X-ray is a true lateral projection obtained with the elbow flexed 90° and the forearm in a neutral (thumb‑up) position so the radius and ulna are superimposed. The humeral condyles are perpendicular to the image receptor. This view shows anterior‑posterior alignment, joint congruity, and displacement of fractures or dislocations involving the forearm, elbow, and wrist.

A lateral view in X-ray is a side-to-side radiographic projection where the X-ray beam passes from one side of the body to the other and the detector is on the opposite side. It produces a profile image showing depth, relationships and overlapping structures not visible on frontal views, assisting evaluation of the chest, spine, skull and extremities for alignment, displacement, fractures or fluid.

The lateral forearm is the outer (radial or thumb-side) surface of the forearm between elbow and wrist. It includes muscles such as the brachioradialis and parts of the wrist extensors, receives sensory supply mainly from the superficial branch of the radial nerve, and lies over the radius and radial artery. Clinically it is noted for localized pain, numbness, injections, or surgical approaches.

A forearm X‑ray shows bone fractures (including hairline, displaced, and growth‑plate injuries), alignment and joint dislocations, bone tumors or infections, and degenerative changes. It can detect radio‑opaque foreign bodies, soft‑tissue swelling, and healing progress such as callus formation. In children it helps assess bone age and growth‑plate integrity. It cannot show detailed ligaments or nerves—ultrasound or MRI may be needed.

A lateral X‑ray is a side view—not inherently left or right. The specific side is shown by the study label: a "left lateral" means the patient’s left side was against the image receptor (beam enters from the right), while a "right lateral" means the right side was against the receptor. Radiographers place a marker to indicate which lateral projection was taken.

To X‑ray a forearm: obtain anteroposterior (AP) and lateral views including the wrist and elbow. Position the patient seated or supine with the arm extended; palm up for AP and elbow flexed 90° with the thumb up for lateral. Immobilize the limb, use lead shielding, center the beam mid‑forearm, select appropriate exposure, and confirm images show full bone length without rotation.
