X Ray Left Ankle Lateral View

An ankle lateral view X-ray provides a side view of the ankle bones and joint to evaluate fractures, dislocations, bone alignment and joint space. It helps detect talus, tibia and fibula injuries, assess calcaneus positioning, reveal joint effusion or soft-tissue swelling, monitor osteoarthritis, and confirm proper reduction after treatment. It’s commonly used in acute trauma and follow-up care.

Place the patient supine, on the side, or seated with the affected ankle lateral on the image receptor so the lateral malleolus contacts the cassette; dorsiflex the foot to 90°. Center the X‑ray beam at the ankle joint (level of the medial malleolus), perpendicular to the receptor. Include distal tibia/fibula and hindfoot, collimate tightly, use shielding, and confirm a true lateral—fibula superimposed over posterior tibia.

The left lateral ankle is the outer side of the left ankle joint, marked by the bony prominence called the lateral malleolus — the distal end of the fibula. It lies between the lower leg and foot, adjacent to the peroneal tendons and ligaments. This area bears weight and is a common site for sprains, swelling, and tenderness after twisting injuries.

Standard ankle X‑ray series includes three views: AP (anteroposterior) to evaluate joint space and distal tibia/fibula, mortise (AP with 15–20° internal rotation) to visualize the entire ankle joint and syndesmosis, and lateral to assess talar position and posterior malleolus. Additional views may include oblique, weight‑bearing, or stress views to detect subtle instability or fractures.

A lateral view on an X-ray is a side-to-side projection taken with the X-ray beam directed from one side of the body to the other, producing an image of structures in profile. It helps separate overlapping tissues, show depth and anterior–posterior relationships, and is commonly used for chest, spine, and extremity imaging to assess alignment, locate lesions, and detect fluid or hidden abnormalities.

Ankle X‑rays are performed to detect fractures, dislocations, bone alignment problems and degenerative changes after trauma or persistent pain. They help identify joint space narrowing, loose bodies or infection and evaluate healing after treatment. X‑rays guide management decisions—such as casting, surgery or further imaging—especially when there is swelling, deformity, inability to bear weight, or localized tenderness.
