What is a X Ray Chest Lateral Test?
A lateral chest X-ray is a side-view image of the chest that shows the lungs, heart outline, airways, ribs, and nearby tissues. It does not measure a substance. Instead, it shows how X-rays pass through different tissues to reveal structure and abnormal changes. This view is important because it can expose problems hidden on a front view. Chest lateral images help detect pneumonia, fluid around the lungs, a collapsed lung, enlarged heart, rib fractures, and masses. Clinicians use the test to evaluate symptoms like cough, chest pain, fever, or shortness of breath. It is often done with a front (PA) view to give a complete picture. The exam is quick, widely available, and uses a low radiation dose.

X Ray Chest Lateral is often part of a chest X-ray series with a front view. Doctors order it for symptoms like cough, fever, chest pain, or breathlessness, and after chest trauma. It helps detect pneumonia, fluid, collapsed lung, enlarged heart, fractures, and tumors. Abnormal results can come from infections, smoking, chronic lung or heart disease, or injury, and family history of lung cancer or TB may increase need.
