X Ray both Hands AP and Lateral View

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard X-ray projections. AP means the X-ray beam passes from front to back (patient facing the detector or film), useful for chest imaging or when patients can’t stand. Lateral is a side view with the beam passing through one side of the body to the other, showing depth and spatial relationships, often used together to localize abnormalities.

The lateral view of a hand X‑ray is a side projection obtained with the fingers superimposed and the thumb separated to produce a true lateral image. It demonstrates bone alignment, joint relationships and anterior‑posterior displacement, helping detect fractures, dislocations, foreign bodies and soft‑tissue swelling. It complements AP and oblique views for trauma assessment and surgical planning.

A bilateral hand X‑ray is a radiographic study that images both hands at once to compare bones and joints. It helps detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis, growth-plate problems, infections, and deformities. Typically obtained in standard views, the exam is quick, low‑radiation, and useful for assessing symmetry, alignment, bone age and disease progression. Contrast or extra views may be added if needed.

AP hand position: patient seated with arm extended on the table, forearm supinated so the palm faces the X‑ray tube and the dorsal hand rests on the image receptor. Fingers are fully extended and slightly separated, hand centered with the wrist included. Central ray is perpendicular to the third MCP joint. Immobilize/support as needed to keep the hand flat and avoid rotation.
