X Ray Both Feet AP and Oblique View

A foot AP oblique X‑ray is an angled frontal radiograph taken with the foot rotated about 30–45° to give an oblique view of metatarsals and tarsal bones. It improves visualization of bone alignment, joint spaces and areas often hidden on straight AP films, helping detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis or foreign bodies. Performed with simple positioning and low radiation exposure.

AP (anteroposterior), lateral and oblique foot views are standard X‑ray projections to assess bones, joints, and soft tissues. AP shows forefoot and midfoot alignment; lateral shows sagittal profile, calcaneus, and joint relationships; 30–45° oblique highlights metatarsals and tarsometatarsal joints. Together they detect fractures, dislocations, arthritis, and foreign bodies by providing complementary diagnostic angles.

An oblique X-ray view is an angled projection obtained by rotating the patient or directing the X-ray beam between standard frontal (AP) and lateral positions. It separates overlapping anatomical structures, improving visualization of bones, joints, spinal facets, ribs and potential fractures or dislocations that may be hidden on straight AP or lateral views. Oblique views aid diagnosis by revealing anatomy from a different plane.

Position the patient seated or supine with the knee flexed so the plantar surface rests on the detector. Rotate the foot 30–45° medially for an oblique view. Center the X‑ray beam perpendicular to the cassette at the base of the third metatarsal; include toes and tarsal bones. Use appropriate SID, collimate to the foot, apply gonadal shielding, immobilize to prevent motion, and confirm image quality.

A foot oblique X‑ray itself usually takes about 5–10 minutes (the exposure and positioning are quick). Including registration, positioning, any extra views, and brief image review, expect 15–30 minutes at the radiology department. Time can be longer if you need mobility assistance, special positioning, or repeat images for clarity.
