X Ray Both Arms Lateral and AP View

AP (anteroposterior) and lateral are standard X‑ray projections. AP means the X‑ray beam passes from front to back — commonly used for supine or portable exams; it can slightly magnify structures such as the heart. Lateral is a side‑to‑side view at 90° to the AP, giving depth, localizing lesions, and improving visualization of overlapping anatomy.

A PA (posteroanterior) chest X‑ray is taken with X‑rays passing from back to front while the patient stands upright, giving a truer heart size and lung view. A lateral X‑ray is a side view taken at 90°, showing front‑to‑back depth to help locate abnormalities, assess lung lobes, pleural fluid, and mediastinal contours. Both views are often used together.

AP view means anteroposterior projection: the X‑ray beam travels from the front (anterior) of the body to the back (posterior) onto the detector. It’s commonly used for portable or supine patients who can’t stand. AP chest films tend to magnify cardiac and mediastinal structures compared with PA views, so clinicians account for projection‑related distortion when interpreting images.

A true AP forearm is taken with the arm fully extended and supinated so the humeral epicondyles are parallel to the image receptor; radius and ulna lie side-by-side with minimal overlap, including wrist and elbow. A true lateral is obtained with the elbow flexed 90° and thumb-up (neutral), producing superimposed radius and ulna and aligned carpal rows and distal humerus.
