The main source of vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is plant and fungal-derived foods, especially mushrooms and yeast that have been exposed to ultraviolet light. Many fortified plant-based foods (such as some dairy alternatives and cereals) also provide D2. D2 is produced when ergosterol in fungi and plants is converted by UV radiation, making sun-exposed mushrooms a practical dietary source.

Doctors may prescribe vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) mainly for practical reasons: it’s long been available in prescription-strength formulations (e.g., 50,000 IU), is widely stocked and often covered by formularies, and matches established treatment protocols for deficiency. Historical prescribing habits and local availability commonly drive choice, even though vitamin D3 can be somewhat more effective at raising blood 25(OH)D levels.

Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is produced in skin from sunlight and found in animal foods; D2 (ergocalciferol) comes from plants and fungi. Both convert to 25‑OH vitamin D and then the active form, but D3 raises and maintains serum 25‑OH levels more effectively and has a longer half‑life. Clinically, D3 is generally preferred for supplementation.

Vitamin D2 deficiency causes bone and muscle problems such as bone pain, tenderness, muscle weakness and increased fracture risk; in adults it can lead to osteomalacia, and in children to rickets and delayed growth. Other signs include persistent fatigue, mood changes (including depression), impaired wound healing and hair loss. Severe deficiency may cause low calcium with muscle cramps, numbness or tetany.

Vitamin D2 can influence sleep indirectly: adequate vitamin D status helps regulate melatonin production and inflammation. Low vitamin D levels are linked to poorer sleep quality, shorter duration, and daytime sleepiness.
