Vitamin C is the nutrient name; ascorbic acid is the primary chemical form that provides vitamin C activity in foods and supplements. Choose form based on tolerance, dose goals, and cost; dietary vitamin C from fruits and vegetables remains ideal.

Taking vitamin C at night can cause stomach acidity or heartburn when lying down, which may disrupt sleep. Some people also report mild stimulation or vivid dreams after high doses, potentially interfering with falling asleep. To reduce gastrointestinal upset and sleep disturbance, take vitamin C earlier in the day with food and split large doses to lessen gastric irritation.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is usually safe but high doses can cause gastrointestinal symptoms — nausea, abdominal cramps, heartburn and diarrhea — and may increase risk of kidney stones (oxalate) in susceptible people. Large intakes can worsen iron overload in those with hemochromatosis and may interact with some medications. Allergic reactions are rare. Symptoms typically occur with mega‑doses above recommended limits.

Vitamin C is water‑soluble and can be taken any time, but taking it with a meal improves absorption and reduces stomach upset. For single doses, morning with breakfast is convenient; for higher total intake, split into two smaller doses (e.g., morning and midday) for better absorption.
