Video EEG

A normal EEG records the brain’s electrical activity using scalp electrodes for a short period (typically 20–30 minutes) to detect abnormal patterns. A video EEG adds continuous synchronized video recording and prolonged monitoring (hours to days), allowing clinicians to correlate physical signs or suspected seizures with EEG changes. Video EEG is used when events are infrequent, for diagnosis, seizure localization, and pre-surgical evaluation.

A doctor orders a video EEG to record brain electrical activity with synchronized video to capture and characterize episodes. It helps diagnose and classify seizures, distinguish epileptic from non‑epileptic events (including psychogenic spells), localize seizure onset for treatment or surgical planning, assess treatment effectiveness, and monitor unclear or medication‑resistant events. Long-term monitoring increases the chance of capturing rare events.

Video EEG duration varies: standard monitoring is 24–72 hours, while shorter recordings (1–2 hours) may be used for specific tests. Inpatient long-term monitoring can run several days up to one to two weeks if needed to capture seizures. Ambulatory home video EEG commonly lasts 24–72 hours. Your team will recommend length based on seizure frequency and diagnostic needs.

Video EEG is generally safe. Common risks include scalp irritation or redness and adhesive-related allergic reactions from electrodes. Monitoring can provoke seizures (often intended), raising a small risk of injury during an event and transient headaches or fatigue, especially after sleep-deprived studies. Rarely, skin infection, discomfort, anxiety or privacy concerns occur. Serious complications are very uncommon.

Costs vary widely by country, facility and monitoring duration. Short outpatient/ambulatory video‑EEG often costs roughly $300–$3,000 (or local equivalent). Prolonged inpatient video‑EEG for epilepsy evaluation can range from about $1,500 up to $20,000–$25,000 or more. Public healthcare may cover it and many private insurers provide partial or full coverage; ask your provider and insurer for specific estimates.

During a video EEG, a technician attaches electrodes to your scalp with paste or adhesive, sometimes shaving small areas. You’ll be recorded on video while brain waves are monitored for hours to days. You may be asked to sleep, hyperventilate, or undergo flashing lights; medications or sleep deprivation might be used to provoke events. It’s painless, may cause mild skin irritation; bring comfort items.
