Vaginal Swab Culture & Sensitivity

A swab culture and sensitivity test uses a sterile swab to collect microorganisms from a wound, throat, or other body site. The lab cultures the sample to identify bacteria or fungi, then tests various antibiotics to determine which drugs inhibit growth. Results identify the pathogen and guide targeted antimicrobial treatment, helping detect resistance and improve therapy effectiveness.

A vaginal swab collects discharge to identify causes of abnormal symptoms. Tests can detect bacterial vaginosis, yeast (Candida) and trichomonas, and screen for sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhea (often via NAAT). In pregnancy it can check for group B streptococcus. Laboratory analysis may include microscopy, culture, pH measurement or molecular testing to guide diagnosis and treatment.
