Vaginal Paps Smear

The Pap smear (Pap test) screens for cervical cancer by collecting cells from the cervix to detect abnormal or precancerous changes early. It may be done alone or with HPV testing. Regular screening, begun in early adulthood and continued per guideline intervals, lets clinicians treat abnormalities before cancer develops. The procedure is quick, may cause brief discomfort, and is an important preventive test.

Most people feel little or no pain during a Pap smear—usually mild pressure, discomfort, or brief cramping as a speculum is inserted and a sample taken. The procedure lasts only a few minutes. Severe or lasting pain is uncommon; if you experience significant pain, bleeding, or anxiety, tell your clinician—they can use a smaller speculum, take extra care, or investigate underlying causes.

A positive Pap smear means abnormal cervical cells were detected. It often reflects human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, precancerous changes, or—less commonly—cervical cancer. Standard steps: repeat Pap or reflex HPV testing, a colposcopy with directed biopsy if needed, and treatment based on severity (observation, excision like LEEP or cone biopsy, or cancer therapy). A positive result is not a diagnosis of cancer.

A Pap smear primarily screens for abnormal cervical cells and can identify HPV-related changes, but it is not a general test for sexually transmitted infections. It does not reliably detect chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes, HIV, or most other STIs. Specific STI testing (swabs, urine, blood tests or targeted PCR) is required to diagnose those infections—ask your clinician which tests you need.

Pap smear is generally beneficial: it detects precancerous and early cancerous cervical cell changes, enabling timely treatment and markedly reducing cervical cancer risk and mortality. It can cause mild discomfort, false positives or negatives, and occasional anxiety, but serious harms are rare. Regular screening according to age and guideline recommendations is advised because benefits typically outweigh risks.

Pap smear costs in India typically range from about INR 300 to INR 1,200 in private diagnostic labs and hospitals, depending on city, facility and included consultation. Many public or government hospitals offer free or heavily subsidized testing. Prices may be slightly higher if bundled with HPV testing or additional gynecological services—verify with the chosen clinic before booking.
