A urethral discharge culture and sensitivity is a lab test where a swab or urine sample from the urethra is cultured to identify infectious organisms (bacteria, yeast, or sexually transmitted pathogens such as gonorrhea and chlamydia). After growth, the lab tests which antibiotics effectively inhibit the organism (sensitivity) to guide targeted treatment. It diagnoses the cause of abnormal discharge and prevents ineffective antibiotic use.

A urine culture and sensitivity test identifies the bacteria causing a urinary tract infection and determines which antibiotics will effectively treat it. A clean-catch urine sample is cultured to grow and identify organisms; antibiotic susceptibility testing then produces an antibiogram. Results, usually available in 24 to 72 hours, guide targeted antibiotic choice and help detect resistant strains for more effective treatment.

Urethral swabs are collected with a sterile swab, placed in a transport medium, and either plated directly or sent to the lab. For culture, specimens are inoculated onto blood, chocolate and selective (e.g., Thayer–Martin) media, incubated at 35–37°C in 5–10% CO2 for 24–48 hours, then examined by Gram stain, identification and susceptibility testing. NAATs are commonly used for higher sensitivity.

A urethral swab collects discharge from the urethra to test for sexually transmitted infections and urethritis. It commonly detects Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea) and Chlamydia trachomatis; with specific molecular or culture tests it can also identify Mycoplasma genitalium, Trichomonas vaginalis, Ureaplasma species, herpes simplex virus, and other bacteria, or show inflammatory cells indicating infection.

A urethral swab usually causes brief discomfort — a sharp sting, burning, or an urgent need to urinate when the small swab is briefly inserted into the urethra. Pain is typically mild to moderate and short-lived; most people tolerate it without anaesthetic. Rarely it can cause more intense pain or slight bleeding. Urethral discharge is a symptom, not a disease. It can be caused by sexually transmitted infections (like gonorrhea or chlamydia) but also by non‑sexual issues such as urinary tract infections, irritation, or prostate inflammation. Evaluation with urine or swab testing and targeted treatment are important. Avoid sex until cleared and see a healthcare provider promptly for diagnosis and management.
