Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is an imaging test using an ultrasound probe inserted into the rectum to visualize the prostate and nearby tissues. It measures prostate size, detects abnormalities, and commonly guides prostate biopsies. The procedure is quick and usually performed outpatient with local anesthesia; it can cause mild discomfort and carries small risks such as bleeding or infection.

Transrectal ultrasound is usually not painful; most people feel pressure, rectal fullness, or brief cramping as the small probe is inserted. A water‑based gel and gentle technique minimize discomfort. If a biopsy is taken through the probe, you may feel sharper pain or soreness afterward, but local anaesthetic and antibiotics are commonly used. The exam is brief and generally well tolerated.

A transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) scan itself usually takes about 10 to 20 minutes. If combined with a prostate biopsy it commonly takes 20 to 40 minutes. Allow extra time for check‑in, local anaesthetic and brief recovery—appointments often run 30 to 60 minutes in total. Your clinic will provide specific instructions about preparation, timing and post‑procedure care.

TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate) is a surgical procedure that removes obstructing prostate tissue via a resectoscope passed through the urethra to relieve urinary symptoms. TRUS (transrectal ultrasound) is a diagnostic imaging technique using an ultrasound probe in the rectum to visualize the prostate and guide biopsies. TURP treats; TRUS evaluates and aids diagnosis.

Transrectal ultrasound‑guided (TRUS) prostate biopsy is generally safe but not risk‑free. Common side effects include pain, blood in urine/stool or semen, and temporary urinary difficulty. Infection — sometimes severe/sepsis — is the main concern; antibiotic prophylaxis and preparation reduce risk. Transperineal biopsies carry lower infection rates. Discuss individual risks, antibiotics, and when to seek urgent care (fever, severe pain, retention).

Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) commonly causes mild rectal discomfort during the procedure. Afterward you may notice rectal bleeding, blood in urine or semen, and pelvic or perineal soreness for a few days. Less commonly there can be urinary difficulty or retention, fever, chills, or significant pain — signs of infection. Seek urgent care for high fever, severe pain, heavy bleeding, or inability to urinate.
