An elbow ultrasound visualizes soft-tissue structures: tendons (common extensor/flexor), ligaments, muscles, bursae (olecranon), and the ulnar nerve. It detects tendon tears or tendinopathy, bursitis, joint effusion or synovitis, calcifications, cysts or loose bodies, and guides injections or aspirations. Doppler can show increased blood flow from inflammation. It provides dynamic assessment but limited bone cortex detail.

Position the patient seated with the elbow flexed 70–90° and the forearm supinated/pronated as needed. Use a high-frequency linear probe with ample gel. Scan in longitudinal and transverse planes over the joint, olecranon, distal biceps/triceps, common extensor/flexor tendons and the ulnar nerve. Adjust depth/gain, compare with the contralateral elbow, and perform dynamic maneuvers to reveal effusion, tears, or nerve subluxation.

The left elbow is the joint connecting the upper arm to the forearm, combining hinge and pivot functions to allow bending, straightening and forearm rotation. It comprises the humerus, radius and ulna with ligaments, tendons, bursae and the nearby ulnar nerve. Left/right differences mainly reflect hand dominance, injury history and overuse conditions like tendinopathy, bursitis or arthritis.

An elbow ultrasound usually takes about 10 to 30 minutes, commonly around 15 to 20 minutes. The scan itself is quick and non-invasive, with minimal preparation. The sonographer records images and may assess joint movement. You often receive initial findings immediately; a formal written report typically follows within 24 to 48 hours depending on the clinic.

Ultrasound images soft tissues and the bone surface but cannot show bone marrow or internal bone structure. It can detect cortical irregularities, periosteal elevation, subperiosteal fluid, some pediatric or superficial fractures, joint effusions, and guide procedures. For most adult fractures, deep cortical defects, marrow disease, bone tumors, or detailed evaluation, X‑ray, CT, or MRI are preferred. Use ultrasound as a complementary tool.

Initial imaging for elbow pain is usually a plain X‑ray to detect fractures, dislocation or arthritis. Ultrasound is useful for tendon or ligament injuries and guiding injections. MRI is best for complex soft‑tissue problems, occult fractures or cartilage concerns. CT is preferred for detailed bony anatomy in complex fractures. Choice depends on clinical suspicion and physician recommendation.
