Axilla ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging test using high‑frequency sound waves to evaluate tissues in the armpit. It identifies and measures lymph nodes, cysts, abscesses, masses, or inflammation, and can guide needle biopsies or fluid drainage. There’s no radiation; the exam is quick (about 15–30 minutes) and may require removing clothing and applying a gel.

The left axilla, or left armpit, is the anatomical hollow beneath the shoulder where the arm meets the torso. It contains lymph nodes, blood vessels, nerves (branches of the brachial plexus), sweat and sebaceous glands, and hair follicles. It aids lymphatic drainage from the upper limb and breast and is clinically important for assessing lymphadenopathy, infections, skin conditions, and detecting lumps or other abnormalities.

The axilla, commonly called the armpit, is the hollow beneath the shoulder beside the breast. It contains fat, sweat glands, blood vessels, nerves and several groups of axillary lymph nodes that drain lymph from the breast and arm. Clinically it’s important for breast examinations and cancer staging because breast cancer often spreads first to axillary lymph nodes; surgeons may sample or remove these nodes.

To prepare for an axillary ultrasound, wear loose, two-piece clothing for easy arm access and remove jewelry. Avoid deodorant, creams, or powders under the arms on the day of the exam. Bring prior imaging and reports, plus a list of symptoms and medications. Inform staff about implants, recent biopsies, or pregnancy. No fasting is needed; arrive a little early for paperwork or gowning.

Axillary lymph nodes aren’t inherently cancerous; they often enlarge from infection or inflammation. They can, however, contain metastatic cancer cells (commonly from breast cancer) or be the primary site for lymphoma. Persistent, hard, rapidly growing, or painless enlargement should prompt medical evaluation with imaging and possibly biopsy to determine the cause and guide treatment.

On ultrasound, cancerous lymph nodes are often enlarged and round rather than the normal oval shape. They typically appear hypoechoic (darker), show cortical thickening and loss of the central fatty hilum, and may have irregular margins. Doppler may reveal increased peripheral or chaotic blood flow; necrotic areas or calcifications can also be seen. Findings require clinical correlation and biopsy confirmation.
