Ultrasound Both Wrists

A wrist ultrasound visualizes soft tissues and joint structures in real time. It detects tendon injuries (tears, inflammation, subluxation), ligament sprains, ganglion cysts and other fluid collections, synovitis, and nerve abnormalities such as median nerve enlargement in carpal tunnel. Doppler assesses blood flow for inflammation. It also identifies superficial masses, guides injections or aspirations, and may show cortical irregularities and effusions.

A wrist ultrasound is done to identify causes of pain, swelling or a palpable lump (e.g., ganglion cyst), assess tendons, ligaments and the median nerve, detect tears, inflammation or fluid, and evaluate blood flow. It provides real-time, dynamic imaging to see structures during movement and can guide injections or aspirations. It’s noninvasive, fast, and avoids radiation, helping plan treatment or further tests.

Costs vary by country and setting. Public systems often cover it (no patient charge). Private clinic fees typically: UK about £60–£250; US typically $100–$1,000 (commonly $200–$600 out‑of‑pocket without insurance); India roughly ₹300–₹1,500. An ultrasound of the wrist typically takes about 15–30 minutes. The actual scanning is often 10–20 minutes, with the remainder used for positioning, imaging multiple views or both wrists, Doppler assessment, and brief discussion of preliminary findings. Complex cases or additional imaging can extend the appointment, and allow extra time for registration and paperwork.

Ultrasound cannot reliably image internal bone structure but is useful for detecting superficial cortical breaks, periosteal reactions, joint effusions, soft-tissue injuries, and guiding procedures. It’s especially helpful in children and for superficial bones due to no radiation and portability. However, X-ray, CT or MRI remain preferred for most fractures, deep bone pathology, and detailed cortical or marrow assessment.

A doctor examines the wrist for pulse and blood flow (radial pulse, capillary refill), skin temperature and color, swelling, bruising or deformity, range of motion and strength, joint stability and crepitus. They test sensation and motor function to assess nerve involvement (e.g., median nerve) and may perform specific maneuvers (Tinel’s or Phalen’s) to detect carpal tunnel. Tender points guide imaging or treatment.
