Thyroid Elastography

Thyroid elastography is a noninvasive ultrasound technique that measures tissue stiffness to evaluate thyroid nodules and diffuse thyroid disease. Using shear-wave or strain methods, it produces stiffness values or color maps that help distinguish likely benign from suspiciously firm (possibly malignant) lesions. Performed alongside conventional ultrasound, it’s quick, painless, and can reduce unnecessary biopsies, though it doesn’t replace fine-needle aspiration when indicated.

Thyroid ultrasound is used to evaluate lumps or an enlarged thyroid, characterize nodules (solid versus cystic), measure size and shape, and detect abnormal lymph nodes. It guides fine‑needle aspiration biopsies, monitors known nodules or goitre over time, and helps assess inflammatory changes. It images structure but not hormone function, so it complements blood tests and clinical examination.

So FibroScan is one form of elastography, but not all elastography methods are FibroScan — other types include shear-wave ultrasound and MR elastography.
