A swallow study is a diagnostic test that evaluates how you chew and swallow. Common types use X-ray with contrast (modified barium swallow) or a small camera passed through the nose (FEES) to visualize food and liquid movement, identify aspiration, penetration, delays, or residue, and guide safe diet and therapy. It's used for dysphagia after stroke, surgery, or neurological conditions and carries minimal risk.

Failing a swallow study means the person cannot safely move food, liquid, or saliva from the mouth to the stomach without risk of aspiration or airway compromise. Tests detect coughing, wet voice, residue, delayed swallow, or material entering the airway.
