Sheep Sorel

Sheep sorrel is used culinarily for its tangy, lemony flavor in salads, soups and sauces, and in traditional herbal medicine as a digestive aid, mild diuretic and anti-inflammatory. It’s an ingredient in some complementary cancer mixtures and topical folk remedies for wounds. Scientific evidence is limited; it contains oxalates and other compounds, so avoid high intake in pregnancy, kidney stones or with blood-thinning medications.

In India, "sorrel" commonly refers to the sour leafy plant Hibiscus sabdariffa (roselle), known regionally as gongura (Telugu), ambadi (Marathi) and pulichakeerai/pulicha keerai (Tamil). The term can also mean garden sorrel (Rumex acetosa) used in salads, but the familiar culinary sour leaf across many Indian cuisines is usually roselle/gongura.

Sheep sorrel is generally safe to eat in normal culinary amounts (salads, soups, sauces). It contains oxalic acid, so large or concentrated doses can increase oxalate load and may worsen kidney stones, reduce calcium absorption, or cause stomach upset. Avoid medicinal/supplement doses and consult a clinician if pregnant, breastfeeding, have kidney disease, or a history of oxalate stones.
