What is a Reticulocyte Index Test?
The reticulocyte index measures reticulocytes, which are immature red blood cells just released from the bone marrow. It shows how well the bone marrow is producing new red cells. This is important for keeping your oxygen-carrying capacity normal. Doctors use it to check and monitor different types of anemia, blood loss, and bone marrow recovery after treatment. It helps tell whether low red cell counts are from poor production or from loss or destruction. The result guides treatment choices like iron, vitamin B12, or other therapies. It is also useful after transfusions or chemotherapy to watch marrow recovery and treatment response.
