Yes. Many open MRI scanners can use intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agents for enhanced imaging, but lower-field open systems may produce less detailed contrast-enhanced images. Some specialized exams are better done on high-field closed MRI. Before contrast, clinicians check kidney function (eGFR) to minimize rare risks like nephrogenic systemic fibrosis and screen for prior reactions or pregnancy; always inform the radiology team.

Whole body MRI can be performed with or without contrast. Many protocols use non-contrast sequences (STIR, diffusion‑weighted imaging) for screening, marrow or metastasis detection. Gadolinium contrast may be added to better characterize lesions, assess enhancement or vascular detail. A wide-bore (wide-open) MRI is a standard closed-bore scanner with a larger diameter opening (e.g., ~70 cm), maintaining higher field strength (1.5–3T) and better image quality while offering more space and comfort.
