Protein C Activity

High protein C activity is uncommon. It most often reflects recent protein C replacement or blood-product transfusion, laboratory assay variability or interference, rather than a primary disease. In isolation it rarely causes clinical problems and does not typically increase bleeding risk. Results should be interpreted in the context of medications, acute illness, or recent transfusion; consult your clinician for correlation and further testing.

Active protein C is a vitamin K–dependent serine protease that regulates coagulation and inflammation. It inactivates clotting factors Va and VIIIa to limit thrombin generation, promotes fibrinolysis, and exerts anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective effects on endothelium by signaling through the endothelial protein C receptor and PAR-1, reducing cytokine production, leukocyte adhesion, and apoptosis.

Low protein C activity means reduced function of protein C, a vitamin K–dependent natural anticoagulant that inactivates clotting factors Va and VIIIa. It increases risk of venous thromboembolism and may be inherited or acquired (liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, warfarin, sepsis). Diagnosis uses activity assays; management includes anticoagulation and, in severe or hereditary cases, protein C replacement.

Protein C is a vitamin K–dependent plasma protein whose main function is anticoagulation. Once activated, it inactivates clotting cofactors Va and VIIIa, decreasing thrombin generation and limiting clot formation. Activated protein C also has anti‑inflammatory and cytoprotective effects on the endothelium and promotes fibrinolysis, helping maintain balance between coagulation and vessel integrity to prevent excessive thrombosis.

High C‑reactive protein (CRP) indicates inflammation and can be a warning sign. Mild elevation may reflect infection, chronic inflammatory conditions, or increased heart disease risk; very high levels can signal severe infection or sepsis. Protein C treatment replaces deficient anticoagulant protein C to prevent or treat serious clotting problems. Therapy uses intravenous protein C concentrate or fresh frozen plasma to restore levels in congenital or acquired deficiency (for example, purpura fulminans). It lowers thrombosis risk but requires hospital administration, monitoring for bleeding and clotting, and dose adjustment based on levels and clinical response.
