Plasma Dopamine Level Test

The most direct way to assess brain dopamine is functional neuroimaging (PET or SPECT) using radioligands that measure dopamine receptor or transporter activity. There is no routine blood test for central dopamine; CSF measurement of homovanillic acid (HVA) via lumbar puncture can reflect central dopamine metabolism. Plasma or urine dopamine/metabolites are influenced by peripheral sources and are less reliable.

Normal plasma dopamine is very low—typically about 0–30 pg/mL (≈0–0.2 nM) in resting adults. Reported reference ranges vary by laboratory and assay, and levels can rise with stress, posture, medications, or sampling technique. Interpretation should use the specific lab’s reference interval and clinical context; discuss abnormal results with a clinician.

In India, a dopamine test typically costs between INR 800 and INR 3,500, depending on whether it’s a plasma/serum or urine assay, the laboratory, city and the method used (e.g., HPLC). Government hospitals or diagnostic centres are usually cheaper than private labs. Confirm price and any pre-test requirements with the local laboratory before booking.

Low dopamine can show as persistent low motivation, reduced pleasure in activities (anhedonia), fatigue, poor concentration, slowed movements or speech, apathy, mood changes or depression, decreased libido, and cravings or compulsive behaviors. Physical symptoms may include sleep or appetite changes. There’s no simple home test; a clinician evaluates symptoms, medication history and lab/neurological tests to determine causes and treatment.

A dopamine blood test is usually called a plasma dopamine or plasma catecholamine test. Clinicians may measure plasma catecholamines or plasma free metanephrines to assess dopamine and related hormones. Because levels vary, doctors sometimes use 24‑hour urinary catecholamines or metabolite tests (for example homovanillic acid or VMA) for a more reliable evaluation.

ADHD is linked to altered dopamine and norepinephrine signaling in brain networks that regulate attention and impulse control, but it’s not caused solely by “low dopamine.” Genetic factors, brain structure/function differences, and environmental influences contribute. Many effective treatments (stimulant medications) target dopamine pathways, which supports its role, yet ADHD results from complex interactions rather than a single neurotransmitter deficit.
