Some basic lung tests can be done at home: peak flow meters and validated handheld spirometers let patients monitor airflow and detect changes in asthma or COPD. However, full pulmonary function testing (lung volumes, diffusion capacity, body plethysmography) requires specialized lab equipment and trained staff and cannot be fully replicated at home. Use home devices only with clinical guidance; don't use them during sudden severe breathlessness.

To perform a home pulmonary function check, sit upright, breathe normally, then seal lips around a peak flow meter or handheld spirometer. Inhale fully, then blast out air as hard and fast as possible into the device for one to two seconds. Repeat at least three times, record the best reading, clean the mouthpiece, track trends, and contact your clinician if readings drop or symptoms worsen.

Under public healthcare systems PFTs are often free to patients; private spirometry typically costs about $30–$200, while comprehensive lung function panels (including diffusion and plethysmography) can be $150–$600 or more. Check breathing at rest: count breaths per minute (normal 12–20), note cough, chest pain or wheeze. Use a pulse oximeter (normal ≥94% in adults) and a peak flow meter if you have asthma. Do a short exertion test (walk 1–2 minutes) and watch for undue breathlessness. Seek urgent care for SpO2 under 94%, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, or blue lips.
