Mycoplasma IgM test detects IgM antibodies in blood produced against Mycoplasma pneumoniae, indicating a recent or acute infection. It helps diagnose respiratory illness when symptoms like cough or fever occur. Results depend on timing (IgM typically rises within about a week) and can yield false positives or negatives, so clinicians often combine it with PCR, IgG testing, and clinical findings for accurate diagnosis.

A positive Mycoplasma test indicates infection with a Mycoplasma species. PCR positivity usually means active infection; antibody tests can show recent (IgM) or past (IgG) exposure. Symptoms vary and infection can be asymptomatic. Many Mycoplasma infections respond to specific antibiotics. Clinical correlation, follow-up testing, and clinician-led treatment (and partner notification for genital strains) are recommended.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae IgM antibodies typically appear about 1 week after symptom onset, peak by 3–4 weeks, and are usually detectable for around 2–3 months. In some individuals IgM can persist for 6 months or longer, which may complicate interpretation. For more accurate diagnosis, paired acute and convalescent sera or PCR testing are often recommended instead of a single IgM result.

Costs vary by test type and country. PCR/NAAT for Mycoplasma commonly ranges from about $40–$200 in private U.S. labs (antibody tests often cheaper, $20–$100). In the U.K. private testing typically costs £40–£150, while private labs in India charge roughly ₹1,000–₹5,000. Public health services in many countries may offer testing free or at reduced cost.

Mycoplasma infections are often mild—M. pneumoniae commonly causes “walking” pneumonia—but they can be serious in infants, elderly, pregnant or immunocompromised people. Complications include severe pneumonia, respiratory failure, and rare extrapulmonary effects. Genital mycoplasmas can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility if untreated. Most cases respond to appropriate antibiotics; seek care for high fever, breathlessness, chest pain, or worsening symptoms.

Mycoplasma testing detects Mycoplasma species in patients or cell cultures. Clinically, it confirms respiratory or urogenital infection, guides appropriate antibiotic choice and treatment monitoring, and helps rule out other causes. In research and biotech, testing identifies and prevents mycoplasma contamination of cell lines, which can alter experimental results and compromise safety.
