MRI is the preferred scan for TMJ problems because it visualizes the articular disc, joint capsule and soft tissues and detects inflammation or internal derangement. Cone-beam CT or conventional CT is superior for assessing bony structures, fractures and arthritic bone changes. Choice depends on the clinical question—soft-tissue versus bony pathology—and should be guided by your clinician.

Diagnosis of TMJ disorder is primarily clinical—medical history and physical exam (palpation, jaw range of motion, joint sounds, occlusion). Imaging confirms findings: panoramic X‑ray or CT/CBCT for bony changes, MRI for disc position and soft tissues. Arthroscopy, diagnostic joint injection or aspiration are used selectively; electromyography and bite analysis may help in complex cases.
