MRI Scan Spine Whole Contrast

Spine MRI can be performed with or without contrast. Routine spine scans are usually done without contrast, but gadolinium-based contrast is added when more detail is needed—such as to evaluate tumors, infection, inflammation, or to distinguish scar tissue from recurrent disease. Contrast is used selectively based on clinical indication and patient factors (e.g., kidney function, pregnancy).

A whole-spine MRI images the cervical, thoracic, lumbar and sacral regions in sagittal and axial planes using sequences such as T1, T2 and fat‑suppressed/STIR; contrast (gadolinium) may be added if required. It evaluates vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord, nerve roots, ligaments, bone marrow and epidural space to detect degeneration, herniation, infection, inflammation, demyelination, tumors or metastases.

Cost of a whole‑spine MRI varies by country and facility: in India roughly ₹2,500–₹12,000; in the UK private scans around £200–£700 (NHS scans are free with referral); in the US approximately $600–$4,000 without insurance; in Canada private rates often CAD 200–1,500. Prices rise with contrast use, higher‑end centers, and urgent or inpatient scheduling.

A whole‑spine screening MRI typically takes about 30–60 minutes. Scan duration varies with scanner type, the number and detail of sequences, and whether contrast dye is required; using contrast or adding high‑resolution sequences can extend the appointment to around 60–90 minutes. Also allow extra time for registration, safety screening and positioning before and after the scan.

A full spine MRI with contrast typically involves about 30–60 minutes of actual scanning. Including IV placement, safety screening, contrast injection and positioning, expect 60–90 minutes at the imaging center. Total time can vary with scanner type, the number of sequences requested, and patient movement; more complex or emergency studies may take longer.

A spine MRI can detect structural causes of nerve problems—disc herniation, spinal stenosis, tumors, inflammation—and may show nerve root compression or swelling. However, it cannot directly measure microscopic nerve-fiber or functional damage; MRI shows anatomy, not nerve conduction. Diagnosis typically combines MRI results with clinical examination and, if needed, electrodiagnostic tests (EMG/NCS) to assess nerve function.
