MRI Scan Spine Cervical

MRI of the cervical spine visualizes vertebrae, intervertebral discs, spinal cord and nerve roots, and surrounding soft tissues. It detects disc herniation, degenerative changes, spinal canal narrowing (stenosis), spinal cord compression, tumors, infection, inflammation, demyelination and bone marrow abnormalities. It helps evaluate neck pain, radiculopathy, myelopathy, trauma, and pre‑surgical planning by showing pathology not seen on X‑ray.

Cervical spine MRI costs vary widely by country and facility. In the US, self-pay prices commonly range roughly $400–$3,000+ (higher for contrast or hospital settings); in the UK it’s free on the NHS or about £200–£800 privately. In India, typical clinic prices are about ₹2,000–₹8,000. Final cost depends on location, hospital vs imaging center, use of contrast, and insurance.

A cervical MRI is generally painless and noninvasive. You lie still inside the scanner; most people feel only mild discomfort from lying flat, tight coil pressure, loud noises, or claustrophobia. If contrast dye is used you may feel a brief sting, warmth, or metallic taste. Severe pain is uncommon; sedation or open scanners can help if anxiety or discomfort occur.

An MRI of the cervical spine typically takes about 15–45 minutes of scanning time. Total appointment time may be up to an hour or longer to allow for registration, positioning and any contrast injection. Scan duration varies with the number of imaging sequences, use of contrast, patient movement, and special positioning or claustrophobia, which can extend the session.

A cervical MRI can detect structural causes of nerve injury, such as disc herniation, foraminal stenosis, spinal cord compression, and signal changes (for example, T2 hyperintensity) that suggest myelopathy. It shows anatomy but not nerve function; electromyography and nerve conduction studies assess functional damage. Small peripheral nerve injuries may be missed, and further tests or imaging may be needed.

A cervical spine MRI is focused on vertebrae, spinal cord, discs and nearby soft tissues. It can incidentally include part of the lower neck and might show a thyroid mass or enlargement, but it is not optimized for thyroid evaluation. For suspected thyroid disease, ultrasound is the preferred first-line test; further CT, dedicated MRI sequences or biopsy may be recommended for characterization.
