MRI Scan Sialography Minor Glands

Yes. Major salivary glands — parotid, submandibular and sublingual — are readily seen on MRI, which offers excellent soft-tissue contrast to assess gland size, inflammation, obstructing stones, cysts and tumors. Contrast-enhanced and dedicated head-and-neck sequences improve detection and characterization. Very small ducts or tiny calcified stones may be better evaluated with ultrasound or CT/sialography when MRI is inconclusive.

Minor salivary gland disease includes conditions affecting the many small glands in the lips, cheeks, palate and tongue, such as mucoceles, sialadenitis and benign or malignant tumours. Symptoms range from painless or tender swellings, bluish mucous-filled cysts, ulceration or dryness to occasional pain. Causes include trauma, duct blockage, infection or autoimmune disease. Treatment varies from observation and warm compresses to excision, antibiotics or steroids.

MR sialography is a non-invasive MRI technique using heavily T2-weighted sequences to visualize salivary glands and ducts without injected contrast. It highlights fluid-filled ducts to detect stones, strictures, ductal dilatation and inflammation. Benefits include no ionizing radiation or iodinated contrast; chewing may be used to stimulate saliva. Limitations: lower resolution for very small ducts/stones and standard MRI contraindications.

Minor salivary glands are numerous tiny glands embedded in the oral mucosa (lips, cheeks, palate, floor of mouth, and tongue) and are not normally visible. They become apparent only when enlarged, inflamed, obstructed, or forming cysts (mucoceles), appearing as small bumps or translucent bluish swellings. A dental or ENT exam is recommended for persistent or painful lesions.

Ultrasound is the best initial scan for salivary glands: noninvasive, no radiation, and excellent for detecting stones, cysts, and masses. If more detail is needed—suspected tumor, deep‑lobe parotid involvement, or complex ductal anatomy—MRI (including MR sialography) offers superior soft‑tissue contrast. CT is preferred for calcified stones or bone/abscess evaluation; clinical context guides choice.

Early signs of salivary gland tumors often include a painless lump or swelling near the jaw, in front of the ear, under the chin, or inside the mouth. Other early symptoms can be persistent pain in the area or ear, facial numbness or weakness, difficulty swallowing or opening the mouth, and reduced or bloody saliva. Rapid growth or skin fixation needs prompt evaluation.
