MRI Scan Sella Contrast

MRI sella contrast is an MRI of the sella turcica performed with intravenous gadolinium contrast to enhance visualization of the pituitary gland and adjacent structures. Contrast improves detection and characterization of pituitary adenomas, microadenomas, cysts, stalk lesions and cavernous sinus invasion. The exam lasts about 20–30 minutes; kidney function and contraindications (e.g., certain implants or contrast allergy) are checked beforehand.

Costs vary widely by country and facility. In India private centers typically charge about INR 3,000–10,000 (~$35–125) for an MRI sella (pituitary) with contrast. In the UK private MRI ranges about £200–£600, while public healthcare often provides it free when clinically indicated. In the US private-pay prices commonly range $400–$3,000+. Verify with local imaging centres and your insurer.

Pituitary MRI uses intravenous gadolinium-based contrast agents (gadolinium chelates, e.g., gadobutrol or gadopentetate) administered for dynamic contrast-enhanced sequences to improve detection of microadenomas and characterize lesions. Macrocyclic gadolinium agents are commonly preferred for safety. Dose and choice depend on renal function and local protocols; agents are given intravenously at standard gadolinium dosing.

Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are used for brain MRI. Injected intravenously, they enhance visualization of tumors, inflammation, infection, and areas of blood–brain barrier breakdown or abnormal vascularity. GBCAs are generally safe but require caution in severe kidney disease because of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis risk; there is also concern about small gadolinium deposits after repeated use. Dosing is weight‑based.

Large (macro) pituitary tumors are usually visible on non-contrast MRI or CT, but small microadenomas (under 10 mm) often are subtle and can be missed without gadolinium‑enhanced MRI. Dynamic contrast sequences improve detection and characterization. Clinical signs and hormone testing guide imaging choice; an endocrinologist or neurosurgeon will typically request contrast MRI when a pituitary lesion is suspected.

An empty sella is not a brain tumor. It's a radiological finding where the sella turcica is partly filled with cerebrospinal fluid and the pituitary gland looks flattened. Often incidental and benign, it can sometimes be linked to hormonal problems, headaches, or CSF leak. Evaluation by an endocrinologist and MRI review will determine whether further testing or treatment is needed.
