MRI SCAN RIGHT SHOULDER

A right shoulder MRI visualizes bones (humeral head, glenoid), cartilage, labrum, rotator cuff tendons, bursae, ligaments and surrounding muscles, detecting tears, tendinopathy, inflammation, impingement, arthritis, fractures, bone marrow changes, infections or tumors. It shows joint effusion and postoperative or chronic degenerative changes; contrast may highlight inflammation or labral tears. Findings guide diagnosis and treatment planning.

Costs vary by country, facility and whether contrast is used. In India typical fees are about ₹2,000–12,000. In the UK it’s free on the NHS; private scans cost roughly £200–£700. In the US shoulder MRIs commonly run $400–$3,500 (higher at hospitals or with contrast). Prices change over time; ask whether radiologist fees, urgent-report charges or extra sequences are included.

An MRI of the shoulder is generally painless. You lie still while the scanner takes detailed images; there’s no cutting. Discomfort can come from holding a position if your shoulder already hurts, noise, or claustrophobia. If contrast is used, the injection may sting briefly. Technicians can offer cushions, ear protection, or alternatives (open MRI) to improve comfort.

A right shoulder MRI scan typically takes about 20–45 minutes for the imaging itself. Without contrast it's often 20–30 minutes; with contrast or additional sequences it may take 30–60 minutes. Allow extra time (15–30 minutes) for arrival, changing, safety screening and setup, so total appointment time is commonly 45–90 minutes. If you have claustrophobia or need sedation, plan extra time.

Yes—MRI can detect nerve damage in the shoulder, mainly indirectly by showing denervation changes in muscles (edema, atrophy, fatty infiltration) and directly with high-resolution or MR neurography to visualize nerve lesions or compression. Conventional MRI can miss small peripheral nerve injuries, so results are often combined with clinical exam and electrodiagnostic studies (EMG/nerve conduction) for accurate diagnosis.

A plain shoulder MRI does not prevent driving. Exceptions: if you were sedated, given strong painkillers, had an arthrogram with local anesthetic, or received an interscalene/nerve block causing arm numbness/weakness, you should not drive until sensation and strength return. Also avoid driving if you feel dizzy, disoriented, or unwell. Follow the radiographer’s or clinician’s specific instructions.
